Privacy Policy
This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, and protect your personal data when you use the FireRadarmobile application (the “App”). We process personal data in accordance with Regulation (EU) 2016/679 (the “GDPR”), Slovak Act No. 18/2018 Coll. on Personal Data Protection, and applicable ePrivacy rules.
1. Who we are (data controller)
The controller of your personal data is DigitalChoice s. r. o., a company incorporated in the Slovak Republic, with its registered office at Gazdovská 39/28, 040 01 Košice – mestská časť Kavečany, Slovakia, Company ID (IČO): 54493714, Tax ID (DIČ): 2121688745, VAT ID (IČ DPH): SK2121688745, registered in the Commercial Register of the Mestský súd Košice (“we”, “us”, or “FireRadar”).
For any privacy-related questions or to exercise your rights, contact us at info@wildfireradar.org. We have not appointed a Data Protection Officer, as we are not required to do so under Article 37 GDPR.
2. Summary at a glance
- We collect the minimum data needed to warn you about nearby wildfires: your saved alert locations, a push notification token, and — only with your permission — your device location.
- We do not sell your personal data and we do not show third-party advertising.
- We do not track youacross other companies’ apps or websites within the meaning of Apple’s App Tracking Transparency framework.
- Wildfire detections shown in the App come from public satellite and agency sources (e.g. NASA FIRMS, NOAA); those sources receive no data about you.
- You can delete your account and data at any time, directly in the App (see Section 11).
3. What data we collect
3.1 Data you provide
- Saved alert locations— the places (coordinates and optional labels such as “Home” or “Cabin”) you ask us to monitor, together with your chosen alert radius.
- Account data (optional) — if you create an account: e-mail address and authentication credentials. The App can be used without an account.
- Support communication — the content of messages you send us and your contact details.
3.2 Data collected automatically
- Device location (with your permission)— precise or approximate location, used to show fires near you and, if you enable it, to alert you wherever you are. You can grant, limit (“While Using”, approximate only), or revoke this permission at any time in iOS Settings.
- Push notification token — a pseudonymous Apple Push Notification service (APNs) token, needed to deliver alerts.
- Device and diagnostic data — device model, OS version, App version, language, crash reports, and basic performance data.
- Usage analytics (only with your consent)— aggregated in-app events used to improve the App. You can decline or withdraw consent in the App’s settings without losing any functionality.
3.3 What we do not collect
We do not collect special categories of personal data (Article 9 GDPR), we do not use your data for third-party advertising, and we do not combine your data with data from data brokers.
4. Why we process your data and on what legal basis
| Purpose | Data used | Legal basis (Art. 6 GDPR) |
|---|---|---|
| Delivering wildfire alerts for your saved locations | Saved locations, alert radius, push token | Performance of a contract (Art. 6(1)(b)) |
| Showing fires near your current position | Device location | Consent (Art. 6(1)(a)) — via the iOS location permission |
| Operating, securing, and debugging the App | Device and diagnostic data, logs | Legitimate interest (Art. 6(1)(f)) — keeping the service reliable and secure |
| Product analytics | Usage events (pseudonymised) | Consent (Art. 6(1)(a)) |
| Responding to support requests | Contact details, message content | Legitimate interest (Art. 6(1)(f)); contract where the request concerns your subscription |
| Compliance with legal obligations (tax, accounting) | Billing records | Legal obligation (Art. 6(1)(c)) |
Where we rely on legitimate interest, we have carried out a balancing test; you may request a summary of it and you have the right to object (Section 10).
5. Location data
Location is central to what FireRadar does, so we handle it conservatively:
- Your live device location is used on your device to render the map around you. It is sent to our servers only if you enable features that require it (e.g. “alert me wherever I am”), and then only as coarse coordinates needed for matching against fire perimeters.
- Saved alert locations are stored on our servers because alerts must be evaluated even when the App is closed.
- We never build movement profiles and we never disclose location data to advertisers or data brokers.
6. Push notifications
Alerts are delivered through the Apple Push Notification service. You can disable notifications at any time in iOS Settings; if you do, life-safety alerts cannot reach you, but the App remains usable.
7. Who we share data with
We share personal data only with processors acting on our documented instructions under Article 28 GDPR data processing agreements:
- Hosting and infrastructure: Hetzner Online GmbH (Germany, EU region)
- Push delivery: Apple Inc. (APNs)
We may also disclose data where required by law or to establish, exercise, or defend legal claims. We do not sell personal data. Public wildfire data providers (NASA FIRMS, NOAA, regional agencies) supply data to us and receive nothing about you.
8. International transfers
We store personal data within the European Economic Area wherever possible. Where a processor transfers data outside the EEA (for example, Apple in the United States), the transfer is protected by an adequacy decision of the European Commission (including the EU–US Data Privacy Framework, where the recipient is certified) or by Standard Contractual Clauses with supplementary measures. You may request a copy of the relevant safeguards.
9. How long we keep data
| Data | Retention period |
|---|---|
| Saved locations, account data | Until you delete them or your account; deleted within 30 days of account deletion |
| Live device location (server-side matching) | Processed transiently; not retained beyond what alert evaluation requires (max. 24 hours) |
| Push token | Until you disable notifications, delete the App, or delete your account |
| Crash and diagnostic logs | 90 days |
| Analytics events (consent-based) | Pseudonymised; deleted or aggregated after 14 months |
| Support correspondence | 24 months after the case is closed |
| Billing records | 10 years, as required by Slovak accounting law |
10. Your rights under the GDPR
You have the right to:
- Access your personal data (Art. 15);
- Rectify inaccurate data (Art. 16);
- Erase your data (“right to be forgotten”, Art. 17);
- Restrict processing (Art. 18);
- Data portability — receive your data in a machine-readable format (Art. 20);
- Object to processing based on legitimate interest (Art. 21);
- Withdraw consent at any time, without affecting prior processing (Art. 7(3)).
To exercise any right, e-mail info@wildfireradar.org or use the in-app privacy settings. We respond within one month (extendable by two months for complex requests, in which case we will inform you). We do not use automated decision-making producing legal effects within the meaning of Article 22 GDPR.
You also have the right to lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority, in particular the Slovak data protection authority: Úrad na ochranu osobných údajov Slovenskej republiky, Hraničná 12, 820 07 Bratislava 27, Slovak Republic, dataprotection.gov.sk— or with the authority of your habitual residence or place of work.
11. Deleting your account and data
You can delete your account and all associated personal data directly in the App under Settings → Account → Delete account, or by e-mailing info@wildfireradar.org. Deletion is completed within 30 days, except for billing records we must keep by law. If you use the App without an account, deleting the App removes locally stored data, and your saved locations and push token are purged from our servers after 90 days of inactivity.
12. Children
The App is not directed at children under 16. We do not knowingly process the personal data of children under 16 without verifiable parental consent (the age applicable under Slovak law implementing Article 8 GDPR). If you believe a child has provided us data, contact us and we will delete it.
13. Security
We apply technical and organisational measures appropriate to the risk (Art. 32 GDPR), including encryption in transit (TLS) and at rest, access controls, logging, and the principle of least privilege. No system is perfectly secure; if a breach is likely to result in a high risk to you, we will notify you and the supervisory authority as required by Articles 33–34 GDPR.
14. Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Material changes will be announced in the App before they take effect, and the “Last updated” date above will change. Earlier versions are available on request.
